Justice & Policing - December Conversation Topic
Opportunity to share ways to improve the quality of life for Grand Rapidians

We have all heard the stories about unequal justice and police actions in Grand Rapids. Some have experienced the inequity firsthand, and a few neighborhoods are regular targets of aggressive policing. In December, we have three chances to make suggestions about the future of policing. Please consider attending one of the discussions scheduled - click here to RSVP to one of the events.

There is a process to address inappropriate behavior in the Grand Rapids Police Department, but it seems to be broken. The Civilian Appeals Board (CAB) is not working to protect citizens; its processes need to be changed. Ask that the mayor investigate and encourage changes to the CAB process. The current system is not supportive of residents and is minimizing participation and reducing the number of claims filed, last minute cancellations of CAB are common as noted by live feeds not airing.

Some suggestions for items to bring up could be to request that GRPD be supervised and audited at all filings of body cam footage, that the filing location be moved from police headquarters to another city office, that OPA (office of oversight and public accountability) be automatically and directly involved in all filings to CAB.

It is important that oversight be increased for GRPD to reduce the incidence of aggressive behavior. Request an increase in number of social workers partnering with police officers to prevent officer-initiated escalation. Suggest/request that all body cam footage be delivered and confirmed through a third party until GRPD can prove that footage is not being manipulated prior to viewing.

We need to speak up so residents can have a more positive relationship with GRPD. If you have a specific example of intimidation, overreach, aggressive behavior please use it as an example. If you know someone who has a personal experience to share go with them for support. If you are not comfortable speaking, there are comment cards available. These meetings are meant to be conversations, please see guidelines here about participation.
